ADSL Now Available

ADSL from Netpath

Netpath is pleased to announce that ADSL services are now available from the Burlington, Winston-Salem and Greensboro areas served by BellSouth.

If you are interested in ADSL high-speed, 24 hour a day connections from Netpath, please fill out the short form at the bottom of this page. If you have other questions pertaining to ADSL, you can E-mail adsl@netpath.net

What is ADSL?

I am not trying to write an infomercial here, but our offices have been inundated with a series of questions. Simply put, ADSL is a special signal we provision on an existing phone line in your location which provides you fast, 24 hour-a-day access to the Internet. You will no longer need to use a modem nor track how many hours you have used. If you desire more information than this, go to Ask Jeeves! and ask the question "What is ADSL?"

Unlike cable modems, ADSL is not a shared medium. In other words, RoadRunner and such services share access with everyone along your cable span. This means that as they add more and more subscribers on your line, your speeds will drop dramatically. ADSL is a dedicated point-to-point circuit that feeds only your location. Thus your potential speed will not be affected by the number of subscribers in your area!

Why do I need ADSL?

Advantages:

Much faster than standard 56k dialup. On all the time. No chance of busy signals. No waiting for the modems to dial, then connect, then authenticate, it's just there, all the time, instantly. Web sites are faster, email is faster. Some files on the Internet are very large. ADSL allows these large files to download in a flash instead of tying up a phone line and computer for hours. If multiple computers are already established on a Local Area Network (LAN), then all computers will be able to share the ADSL connection, with no additional hardware, and without the system slowing way down as it would sharing a 56k dialup connection.

Disadvantages:

More costly than standard 56k dialup.

Why Choose Netpath for ADSL?

There are so many options that are out there that appear to be on par with Netpath's ADSL service, however they are not. One major reason is in the design of the infrastructure. As I write this (5/10/2000 @ 10:45am), Bellsouth.net's Winston-Salem hub (which serves everything in this area) has been down for almost 2 hours and are still down. What this means is that any of their customers have been unable to get to the Internet since 9 am.

Unlike such companies, Netpath has been designed to be multi-homed -- in other words, we have multiple connections with different companies. Instead of putting all of our eggs in one basket, we prefer to hedge our bets with mutliple avenues to the Internet backbone. Think about which scenario is better if you have to travel to Greensboro: one highway, or multiple interstates? We prefer having the option of taking a different way if there is something blocking one highway!

Another way that we are different is the fact that our technical staff are all local. We can solve your issues locally and rapidly. This is an aspect of our service that you have experienced and which makes the others pale in comparison.

If you are in the market for fast access, it pays to know what to look for. The bottom line price is not necessarily the #1 criterion. Look for a well-designed infrastructure that ensures that you will remain online for the longest possible time with the least delays. If you consider this, then Netpath should present itself as being one of the top choices.

Ask your possible choices how many connections to the Internet backbone do they have. Speed is useless if you cannot connect to anything!

Netpath's installation team will connect you to ADSL, set up your machine, and ensure that everything is configured. Determine if this is the case with your other choices. The ADSL Modem that will be used and recommended by Netpath are made by Alcatel and 3Com .

If you have any questions, or wish to determine if Netpath can provide DSL to your location, please fill out the form below or Email adsl@netpath.net with your full telephone number(s).
