Instant Enzymes
from Carolina Biotechnology
Restriction enzymes take their names from the bacteria that produce
them. EcoRI (the first such enzyme to be discovered) comes from Escherichia coli,
strain RY13. The numeral I in the enzyme's name indicates that this was the first
restriction enzyme found in E. coli. BamHI is obtained from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens
H, (with the numeral I again showing that this was the first restriction enzyme found in
this bacterium). HindIII is made by Haemophilus influenzae Rd. Here the III indicates that this was the third restriction enzyme
isolated from H. influenzae. Many restriction enzymes are now obtained from
high-yielding strains of bacteria that have been modified genetically. Traditionally,
restriction enzymes have required careful handling and storage in a nonfrost-free freezer.
This has been inconvenient for some users.
The latest development in restriction enzyme technology is room-temperature storage
of restriction enzymes. No longer do you have to worry about enzymes losing activity!
These enzymes are freeze-dried in reaction buffer as well, so you don't have to add the
buffer separately. And, you won't have to aliquot the restriction enzyme since they come
in individual reaction tubes. So there's no more waste from pipetting errors. Each tube
comes with sufficient enzyme activity to digest 1.5 µg of DNA in 20 min. Packaged in
strips of 8 or 16 tubes.
