| STC UNITS
|
For years educators have stressed that students learn
better "by doing"especially in the sciences. Students of all ages learn more
science-content and skillswhen they engage in investigation and discovery using
everyday materials and the basic equipment of science. How can this learning take place in the classroom? With carefully designed inquiry-centered units that involve children hands-on. Such units must capture children's natural curiosity, stimulate their interest in science, and teach them important science concepts, along with critical-thinking skills. Children love Science and Technology for Children (STC) units. Teachers do, too. Developed by the National Science Resources Center (NSRC)a cooperative venture of the Smithsonian Institution and the National Academy of SciencesSTC units help teachers engage students in observation, measurement, identification of properties, and controlled experimentation involving life, earth, and physical science concepts. These units are rigorously researched by leading scientists and science educators and developed with the help of teachers and children in schools across the country. The results are sequences of lessons that students can enjoy and genuinely learn from and that teachers can effectively manage and assess. What Is an STC Unit? |
